Tony Souza, an ageing activist, recounts his life, struggles, loves and friendships. Whether behind or in front of the camera, he’s always talking with the film crew, his stories readily resonating with the present. Through narrative, sound and sensory choices, Both, Instrument & Sound explores the concept of tension, defining it simply as a relationship between two things. In this journey, conversations with Tony intermingle with the textures of everyday life, those of the 16 mm film on which the film is captured, and the musical variations interspersed within. From these combinations sometimes verging on synesthesia emanates a breath of solidarity and sharing imbued with benevolence, in the colours of past and present activism. (AJL)
